Spec MX-5 & Spec Miata Team: CRP Racing

CRP Racing, headquartered in Grove City, Ohio was established about 20 years ago and is "Your One Stop Race Shop."  CRP has been specializing in track support at go kart tracks around the United States but have branched out to focus on advancing drivers through the ranks in motorsports from karting to cars.  They are not only your one stop race shop for all your karting and Miata needs, but also a professional racing team. Their race team has a professionally ran and operated race shop and body shop located in Grove City, Ohio, which is ran by owner John Grim who has over 20 years’ experience in Automotive, Restoration, and working alongside professional race teams such as Nitro Motorsports.   CRP Racing is currently and will continue competing in the Spec Miata program and recently added Spec MX-5 in association with NASA and SCCA.  Their program offers arrive and drive opportunities, trackside support, transportation, parts, coaching, data support and most importantly a fun environment for drivers and all guests. For more information you can visit them at www.MiataRace.com.

MAZDA SPEC MX-5

The Spec MX-5 race car is based on the NC-generation (2006-2015) Mazda MX-5. The NC platform has been selected because:

  • it allows a tightly-controlled spec series

  • it allows relatively low-cost cars to be built and run

  • the platform is capable of high performance.

The Spec MX-5 race car uses the renowned Mazda MZR engine, with a Roush CNC cylinder head and Mahle pistons (all forged internals). This provides an affordable, tightly controlled & reliable engine package. With a racing weight of 2525 lb., Spec MX-5 fits nicely in several club racing classes, specifically SCCA SMX & STL and NASA ST5, and many endurance classes.

With its race suspension, including Penske single-adjustable shocks, Eibach springs and the Toyo RR race tires used in the series, Spec MX-5 cars are significantly faster than Spec Miatas and T4 NC racers, and just slightly slower than ND2 MX-5 Cup cars.

Spec MX-5 presented by Toyo Tires is THE Driver Development Class. While all seat time is helpful, Spec MX-5 was specifically designed for learning:

  • Spec car to allow drivers to focus on driving

  • Attention to costs, allowing drivers to run early in their careers

  • Karters, recently-licensed drivers, club racers, and those returning mid-career are encouraged to participate and develop their skills here

  • Extensive factory support from Mazda Motorsports

  • MAJOR prize money

Mazda Motorsports provides a $50,000 scholarship for 2 individuals selected at the Mazda Mx5 Shootout, that occurs once a year, where nominees are selected to earn their way to the prize. The two drivers selected to be part of the Mazda Factory Team will get to compete at select SCCA Hoosier Super Tour events in the Spec MX-5 class, recently elevated to a SCCA National category. They will receive a full arrive-and-drive season that this year will include the SCCA Runoffs, plus testing and a racing school. All entry fees and consumables are covered, along with a travel budget, a car damage budget, and more. Along with the scholarship Mazda provides hundreds of dollars per-race payouts at all SCCA Major/Pro Tour events.
